My notes on Windows
Phone 7
I recommend not buying any phone with Windows Phone 7.
First, let me say that I do not want any of my information "in the
cloud". If you are a cloud person, then Windows Phone 7 might be for
you.
When I bought the HTC Surround, I thought my calendar sync
program would work with it. I misunderstood the information on the
Birdie Sync website. It runs on Windows 7, not Windows Phone 7. This
means there is no way to sync calendars over USB with my pc and phone.
I must use the cloud or not at all.
Zune is the Microsoft
replacement for syncing data to or from your phone. Zune does not
permit you to modify where you save the info, just what type of info
you sync. It also does not work with calendar data.
I also
wanted the phone to run my map program. On earlier phones, I used Nokia
maps, which I was able to get for free, or later, using CoPilot.
(Before you run and get CoPilot, read my other notes) Neither will work
on Windows Phone 7. Only apps from the app store or similar can be
installed on the phone, since there is no way to "copy/paste" and run
and installer. (There is a way to do a register hack to allow
copy/paste, but it didn't completely work for me).
Is there a
way to downgrade to Windows mobile 6.5? NO!!! So without using the
cloud, I have an expensive phone which only makes phone calls. Not much
advantage over a $20 GoPhone.
I am open for suggestions on a way
to load my own GPS map, and sync my calendar. I have not yet figured
out how to make Funambol work. My suggestion to Microsoft is to make
the phone sync with the desktop using Zune. Seems a lot easier than
syncing in the cloud.
