My notes on making a
bootable USB drive to check for a virus on any computer
Many times you wonder whether your antivirus program is missing a bug
or two. You can never be sure that the virus hasn't moved while it's
running, and is still on your hard drive after it's finished. Using
Avira and a few simple tricks, you can boot Avira on a USB drive
instead of your main hard drive.
Avira updates their virus definitions twice per day, so you can be sure
of having the latest.
The general procedure is to download the Avira Rescue ISO from the
Avira website. This is a free download. Then program the USB drive
using Unetbootin which also is available as a free download..
With just two clicks, you will create a bootable USB drive simply by
running the Unetbootin, selecting the correct USB drive, and selecting
the ISO you downloaded from Avira.
That's it. Avira and Unetbootin have made it so simple.
Just plug it into your computer, reboot it, and select the USB drive as
the bootable drive. Avira will boot a copy of Linux, and run Avira
antivirus program to check all the drives and repair all the viruses it
finds. Be sure to set the actions you desire before starting the virus
scan.
January 3, 2012 update
Looking
more closely at the Unetbootin program, I see that you can select a
source distribution, and amound them is Kaspersky Rescue Disk. This
means that you only need Unetbootin to make a rescue disk with
antivirus.
