Visual Basic 6 applications running under Windows Vista July 13, 2009

Recently, while writing application code for a customer, my programmer spent days working on the application because it ran well under XP, 2000, and for a while, ran under Windows Vista.

All of a sudden, it quit working under Vista with an error message "Unexpected Error" with no other indication, nor the typical "quitting" message. After a frustrating time, even to the point of eliminating all code except the form itself, he discovered the cause of the error was the Icon used to start the application.

The programmer had found an Icon which he liked for this application, editted the Icon using Corel Photopaint 12 and converting it from a .PNG to a .ICO. When he eliminated the Icon, the program started and ran successfully. He has not yet investigated what is causing this to crash Windows Vista. I will update this page when we know what to do.

If you have comments or suggestions, please e-mail me at the address below, or give me a call.

After a little experimentation, he found that a converter called ICOFX works well and can be located at http://www.icofx.ro
